Support Team

     The Editorial Team may be responsible for ensuring that the journal puts out an issue twice yearly, but the Support Team is equally as important since they take care of the background aspects of journal running, such as website maintenance, finances and PR.  These tasks are an essential component of the journal and are a good arena for creative thinkers to try out new promotional ideas.

Webmaster:(Positions Available: 1)

     The Webmaster is most responsible for maintaining and updating the UBC PSSJ Website, and coordinating with the execs and other team members in the final compilation and formatting of each issue’s articles into their web-based HTML and PDF copies.  The current website, in its draft form, is a WordPress-based operation, with overlap to OJS.  The Webmaster also plays a key role in troubleshooting the website and OJS bases, and participating or leading various advertising opportunities with the execs and layout editors of PSSJ.  As a lot of the Webmaster’s work involves the website, they can also play a big role in updating the PSSJ Facebook page, Twitter feed and advancing ideas for other social media advertisements.

Candidate Assets: Familiarity with WordPress, HTML and PDF document formats, advertising/PR experience is helpful; please send examples of your work along with your application

What You Will Gain: Experience with website editing and document compilation; skill working with WordPress, Photoshop, OJS, MS Word and other unique software formats; skill in promotion and website organisation; organisational/ time management skills.

Commitment: 4h per week; position can be done from a distance if consistent access to internet is available.

Term: 1 year

Finance Officer:(Positions Available: 1)

     The Financial Officer’s responsibility is to make sure that the budget for UBC PSSJ balances every fiscal year and to participate in its creation along with the Chief Editors.  They will also issue cheques, invoices and receipts, ensure timely reimbursement to team members for purchases and liaise with the faculty member in charge of the TLEF grant, from which PSSJ’s money comes until 2014.  After this date they may be part of the team effort to find sponsors and raise funds.  The finance officer, like all team members, will play a key role in promotion of PSSJ and attend team meetings.  Essentially, the finance officer will be in charge of making PSSJ’s monetary flow keep flowing and keep a record of all financial transactions that occur throughout the fiscal year.

Candidate Assets: Meticulousness, experience with financial planning of other student-run clubs is helpful

What You Will Gain: Experience with financial planning for an AMS-affiliated club; skill in promotion and team organisation; organisational/ time management skills.

Commitment: 1-2h per week

Term: 1 year

PR Team:(Positions Available: 1-3)

     The PR Team may be comprised of various individuals recruited internally from the Editorial/ Support Teams of PSSJ, but external applicants are also more than welcome.  The PR Team, with the help of the execs/alumni advisors, are responsible for making PSSJ stand out in the world, and solidify its place in the scientific literature.  Using the main PR principles that the team decided on from its first year, the PR team will be responsible for promoting these principles in the form of various advertisements, social media, and any other format, and for ensuring that each issue gets the appropriate advertising pre- and post-release.  Part of the PR Team’s mandate is also to seek out and cultivate alternative funding opportunities and pass along any potential authors/writing ideas to the executives.  In a nutshell, the job involves socializing and designing advertisements to get the word out and ensure it stays spread about UBC PSSJ.

Candidate Assets: Previous advertising experience is preferred, a vision for PR at PSSJ and experience with social media advertising is helpful

What You Will Gain: Experience with PR development from brainstorming meetings to designing promotional events to fit group-generated PR Principles; skill working with WordPress, Photoshop, OJS, MS Word and other unique software formats; skill in promotion and advertising; organisational/ time management skills.

Commitment: 3-4h per week

Term: 1 year
